Utopic Gardens Fall Maintenance

Writer: Utopic GardensUtopic Gardens

Autumn is fast approaching and its time for our year-end 'Utopic Reset'

A vital maintenance service that will help keep your garden plants beautiful and resilient through the upcoming chilly winter months, as well as encourage one last burst of summer blossoms!

For Clients On Our Regular Rotation:

  •  As you may recall, we often spend more time than usual in your garden starting mid-September. That's because we will be giving one last hard prune to those perennial plants and hardy shrubs that have not already set their spring blooms, as well as fertilizing and spraying.

  • If you need to schedule specific dates for your 'Utopic Reset,' please contact me as soon as possible, as I plan our monthly calendar a week in advance of each new month. Otherwise, I will schedule your work as usual.

For All Our Other Clients (not on regular rotation):

Availability is limited, so if you want to schedule your autumn 'Utopic Reset,' or be part of our regular garden rotation, please reach out before the end of August to ensure we can include you!

More Information:

  • This 'Utopic Reset' helps set your plants up for success during the winter, and encourages early blooms and healthier growth when the warm sun returns in spring.

  • When plants are pruned hard in late summer while the sun is still warm, it not only resets their overgrown size, but it also allows them the time needed to recuperate and helps them hold their tidy appearance through the chill of winter.

  • Fertilizing after pruning helps the 'Utopic Reset' process, and spraying horticultural oil (as needed) helps prevent overwintering pests.

  • Autumn is also a good time to mulch your garden. Mulch not only helps to prevent an infestation of weeds, but also acts as a blanket, keeping plant's roots warm and protected over the cold winter months. A second visit will be scheduled after all the leaves have fallen.

  • The 'Utopic Reset' typically runs from mid September to the end of October.

If for some reason the 'Utopic Reset' is put off until spring, you may notice that your typical early bloomers such as Lantana or Pelargoniums actually bloom much later. That's because those plants will spend additional time recuperating instead of quickly bursting forth with spring blooms that they worked all winter making!

Maintenance rates are still as follows until January 2025

  • Angela ($90/hr maintenance & $150/hr Consultation and Design)

  • Helpers ($35-$67/hr depending upon skill and expertise)

  • + materials needed
